ANAHEIM, Calif. -- There was a lot of grumbling in the Los Angeles Angels clubhouse following Garrett Richards latest strong performance. Richards won his sixth decision in seven starts and had a career-high 11 strikeouts Sunday, leading the surging Angels to a 6-1 victory over the Houston Astros and completing a four-game sweep that extended Los Angeles home winning streak to 10 games. But when the pitchers and reserves for the AL All-Star team were announced after the game, Richards name wasnt among them. He could still get the final spot on the squad through fan voting on the Internet. "Its a little disappointing," Richards said. "Theres still a chance, and its an honour just to be considered. If it happens, it happens. But Im more concerned with the second half of the season, to be honest. Ill take a World Series over an All-Star game any day." Richards (10-2) allowed six hits over 7 1-3 innings, including an RBI single by Carlos Corporan in the seventh. The right-hander has a 1.45 ERA in his last seven outings and has allowed no more than four hits in six of them. "Its the same thing Ive been doing all year -- getting ahead of hitters with the fastball and breaking ball, putting guys away with two strikes, throwing quality strikes and just attacking guys," Richards said. "Im happy with the work Ive put in so far, but the seasons only halfway over. Ive had a pretty good first half. But more importantly, were playing good baseball as a team right now." Richards strikeout total was the highest by an Angels pitcher since June 18 last season, when Joe Blanton fanned 11 in a no-decision against Seattle at Anaheim. "I think the skys the limit for Garrett," pitching coach Mike Butcher said. "You look at the stuff, and hes got undeniable stuff -- a mid-90s fastball that cuts and sinks, a power slider that has great depth to it, good action and commands it in the zone very well. Hes got one of the better curveballs in the game and a changeup that is still developing -- but hes getting a feel for that, too." Albert Pujols drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single and Kole Calhoun homered, helping the Angels go 15 games over .500 for the first time since ending the 2012 season at 89-73. They swept a four-game set at home for the first time since July 2011 against Seattle and are 21-3 at the "Big A" since May 17 -- their best 24-game stretch at home in franchise history. "Were playing good ball," centre fielder Mike Trout said. "Were pitching well and our timely hittings been pretty good lately. Were having great at-bats and not trying to do too much." Joe Thatcher, obtained in a trade from Arizona on Saturday, threw one pitch in his Angels debut and gave up a one-out single in the eighth by Jason Castro. But Mike Morin finished the inning with a diving catch of Jon Singletons popup after first baseman C. J. Cron collided with catcher Hank Conger to the right of the mound, knocking the ball out of Congers mitt. "When it first went up into that tough sky, I just kept drifting and started creeping back a bit more than I should have," Conger said. "Then I kind of heard C.J. at the last minute. I felt like I fell into a brick wall. I dont like to give pitchers too much respect, fielding-wise, but I told Mike: Nice catch." Collin McHugh (4-8) gave up three runs -- two earned -- and four hits through four innings before leaving with a broken nail on his middle finger. The right-hander walked two and struck out four in his third start against the Angels this year, becoming the first pitcher in Astros history to get at least four strikeouts in each of his first 14 starts of a season. The Angels loaded the bases in the third when McHugh gave up singles by Conger and Calhoun, and hit Trout on the left biceps with a first-pitch fastball. Pujols stroked a two-run single to left field to open the scoring. Until that hit, the three-time NL MVP was 0 for 13 this season in bases-loaded situations. Trout then scored from second on a throwing error by second baseman Jose Altuve, who was trying to complete a double play on Josh Hamiltons grounder to shortstop Marwin Gonzalez. "We didnt play well. But at the same time, the Angels played real well," manager Bo Porter said. "We didnt help ourselves. When you look at the number of strikeouts and the way we played these last four games, they pretty much took it to us in every aspect of the game. "Right now were in a rut, and we have not played well. But nobody is going to feel sorry for you. Its up to the men in this clubhouse. These are the guys that we have and those are the guys were going to run out there. Its going to be up to us to rectify what it is we have going." Calhoun added his ninth homer in the seventh against David Martinez, who was pitching his third inning after getting recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Angels tacked on two more runs in the eighth against Chad Qualls. NOTES: Trout, heading to his third straight All-Star game, said he will not participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby. ... Pujols two RBIs raised his career total to 1,555, tying Willie McCovey for 41st place all-time. ... Hamilton was 2 for 15 with no RBIs and eight strikeouts in the series, after going 29 for 89 with nine homers and 17 RBIs in his previous 25 games against the Astros since the start of last season. ... Altuve, who began the day leading Texas Adrian Beltre by three percentage points in the AL batting race, got his league-leading 122nd hit and needs two more in the Astros next six games to break Bob Watsons 1973 franchise record for hits before the All-Star break. ... Astros rookie RF George Springer struck out all four times up, increasing his AL-worst total to 105. ... Altuve stole his 25th consecutive base in the sixth inning, the longest streak by an Astro since 2004, when Carlos Beltran swiped 28 in a row. Nick Wittgren Jersey . Ryu (8-3) allowed a run and three hits in six innings and struck out six in his 13th start. In his first 13 starts last season -- his first in the major leagues -- the left-hander was 8-5 with a 2.85 ERA. This was the ninth time this year that Ryu has allowed fewer than three earned runs, and he is 7-0 in those games. Carlos Carrasco Jersey .com) - Houston Texans interim head coach Wade Phillips confirmed Monday that starting quarterback Case Keenum sustained a sprained right thumb during Sundays 25-3 loss in Indianapolis. http://www.indianssale.com/indians-greg-allen-jersey/.Y. - The New York Yankees made it official Saturday, announcing the completion of a seven-year deal with free-agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and a one-year contract for returning starter Hiroki Kuroda. Cleveland Indians Jerseys .com) - Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to miss the next two weeks because of a thigh injury. Brad Miller Jersey . It was the quickest three-goal sequence in Olympic history, with the latter two coming just eight seconds apart. Kessel, Lamoureux and Kendall Coyne all scored twice for the Americans, and Molly Schaus made 10 saves in her Sochi debut.SAN DIEGO - Cody Kessler had three touchdown passes and Javorius Allen ran for two scores as 24th-ranked Southern California held off No. 25 Nebraska, 45-42, in a wild Holiday Bowl. Kessler finished 23-of-39 for 321 yards with an interception. Allen carried the ball 26 times for 152 yards for the Trojans (9-4), who won their sixth bowl game in the last seven tries. Adoree Jackson scored on a 98-yard kickoff return and caught a 71-yard TD pass. We make it entertaining for everybody, USC coach Steve Sarkisian said. I think it sends a pretty good message of the type of program that we have. That were an exciting brand of football. The Cornhuskers (9-4), guided by interim coach Barney Cotton, nearly rallied from an 18-point, second-half deficit in a game the teams combined for 1,040 yards. Instead of attempting the tying field goal, Nebraska ran the ball on 4th-and-3 from the USC 31 with 2:35 left. DeMornay Pierson-El rushed to the left, but Leon McQuay III came from across the field to make the tackle for a 1- yard gain. Nebraska was down to one timeout, which allowed USC to run out most of the remaining time. The Cornhuskers got the ball at their 32 following a punt and a 15-yard USC penalty with 17 seconds left. Kenny Bell was able to get out of bounds at the Nebraska 44 with one second left. USC players had already flooded the field before a video review showed Bell fell out of bounds. Tommy Armstrong Jr.s final pass went short of the end zone and was knocked out of bounds by USC receiver Nelson Agholor. I think they were everything we thought they would be, they were physical and skilled, Cotton said of the Trojans. I thought it was a good battle out there. It was a heck of a football game. Armstrong completed 32-of-51 for 381 yards with three TDs and an interception. Ameer Abdullah rushed 27 times for 88 yards and a score, while Pierson-El had eight receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown. Cotton, who has been on the staff as an associate head coach for the past seven seasons, replaced the fired Bo Pelini. The Cornhuskers let Pelini go on Nov. 30 despite winning at least nine games in each of his seven seasons at the school. Mike Riley, who spent 14 seasons at Oregon State, was named the new Cornhuskers coach earlier this month and watched the game from a skybox. Poor pass coverage led to Jordan Westerkamps 65-yard TD reception with 24 seconds left in the third quarter that brought Nebraska within 45-34. Nebraska came up just short on a 4th down pass from Armstrong to Bell with 11:39 left, but the Cornhuskers got the ball back after a punt and their sophomore QB made a sparkling play to get his team closer. Armstrong hit Abdullah for 33 yards, and later on 4th-and-2 from the USC 15, faked a pitch during an option run and rumbled 15 yards to the end zone. Armstrongs pass to Belll for the 2-point conversion had Nebraska within 45-52 with 6:52 remaining.dddddddddddd USC went 3-and-out on its next possession, but instead of going for the tie, McQuay made the big stop. Drew Brown kicked a 34-yard field goal to get the scoring started, but Jackson returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards. Jackson found a seam up the middle and cut to the right, and made a celebratory flip just as he reached the end zone with 4:06 elapsed. Nebraska went back in front less than three minutes later. The Cornhuskers were flagged for an ineligible man downfield on what looked like a lateral that wound up going for a touchdown. Offensive lineman Alex Lewis was alone on the left side and appeared to be behind the line of scrimmage when he caught the ball and rumbled to the end zone on a third-down play. After a false start pushed the ball back to the 13, Bell made a diving catch on the right side of the end zone to give Nebraska a 10-7 edge. Andre Heidari split the uprights from 42 yards away to tie the game, but Nebraska soared ahead again with 1:25 left in the opening quarter on Armstrongs 9-yard TD connection to Pierson-El. The Trojans had eight penalties in the first quarter, but they managed to go ahead 24-17 with 6:39 left in the half on Allens 2-yard TD run. Before that, Agholor caught a 17-yard TD pass. Armstrong then moved his team deep into USC territory, but his pass across the field was picked off by a diving Sua Cravens at the 12. Replays appeared to show the ball hit the ground as Cravens was making the grab, although the call was confirmed after a video replay. USC widened the gap to two TDs when Jackson caught a short pass on the right side of the field, then outraced defenders for a 71-yard scoring play three minutes into the third quarter. Abdullah cut the deficit to 31-24 just over two minutes later on a 20-yard TD run to the right, but a 44-yard run up the middle by Allen with 8:06 left in the third restored the two-score margin. USCs Kris Albarado had a punt blocked later in the third quarter, but the Cornhuskers only turned it into three points. Nebraska faced a fourth down at the 2 and decided to go for a TD, but the snap from center went off Armstrongs facemask and Abdullah was tackled in the backfield. The Cornhuskers got a reprieve thanks to a false start penalty, which led to Browns 24-yard field goal. The Trojans needed just two plays to expand their lead to 45-27. Kessler hit freshman JuJu Smith with a 45-yard bomb, and Bryce Dixon was left alone over the middle for a 20-yard scoring reception with 2:03 remaining. Game Notes Agholor had seven catches for 90 yards ... Armstrong had 41 yards on 12 caries ... Bell caught seven balls for 71 yards ... USC holds a 4-0-1 edge in its series with Nebraska ... The Cornhuskers had 525 yards of offense. ' ' '
